The Sigmoid Colon

High resolution image: Sigmoid colon

The last part of the colon, sigmoideum, starts at the pelvic brim and ends at the rectosigmoid flexure. It has a characteristic sigma shape, which has given this part of the bowel its name.

The sigmoid colon is of variable length and a long sigmoideum is coiled, which sometimes makes an endoscopic examination difficult.

Diverticulosis - small diverticulas are seen in these images - is a very common finding in the sigmoid colon.
